House Bill 1725 establishes new requirements for documentation regarding the training and experience of newly elected or appointed sheriffs in Arkansas. Within ten days of taking office, a sheriff must file documentation with the county clerk verifying their compliance with Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy standards, their eligibility for employment as a law enforcement officer, or acknowledging that they lack such credentials. The county clerk is mandated to provide this information to the quorum court before the sheriff takes office. The bill further stipulates that if a sheriff lacks the specified training or experience, the quorum court must set their annual salary at the minimum allowable rate. Conversely, if a sheriff later acquires the necessary qualifications, they may submit updated documentation to the quorum court for consideration in adjusting their compensation. The act is set to become effective on and after December 31, 2026.
