Senate Bill 516 amends Arkansas law regarding candidate filing requirements for nonpartisan judicial offices. Specifically, it expands the criteria under which an individual currently serving in a judicial office by appointment may use that official title as a prefix when filing as a candidate for election. Under current law, the use of a judicial title as a prefix is largely restricted to candidates who were previously elected to their position. This bill permits appointees to the Supreme Court or the Court of Appeals to use their current job title as a prefix on the ballot, provided they have served in that appointed position for at least twelve months. The legislation is intended to clarify how appointed judges may identify themselves during the election filing process.
